Video: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing undergoes crash test

The new Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing has already received high praises from arguably everybody in all corners of the world. We figured that Mercedes didn’t have to do anything anymore to convince anyone that their new supercar isn’t drool-worthy.

But just to be on the safe side – literally and figuratively – Mercedes recently released a new video of the new SLS AMG undergoing a series of crash test in the company’s safety labs.

In the video, the SLS AMG undergoes a series of metal-crunching crashes, including one head-on collision and another after being dropped on its roof. As you can imagine with a car that has the full support of Mercedes, the SLS AMG managed to pass the crash test with flying colors, even after being subjected to some pretty nasty s----and collisions.

Priced at over a quarter of a Million dollars, if you are part of the crowd that can afford the new AMG SLS then you are part of an elite group of gull wing enthusiasts that will go from 0 to 60 MPH in 3.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 196 MPH thanks to a very special version of the AMG hand built 6.2 Liter V8. In order to further separate your new super car from the rest of the SLS owner’s registry an owner could leave the amazing German engineered internals alone and focus on the new retro Benz’s appearance. How would a modern day Gullwing with even more styling cues from the original sound. If that sounds like your cup of tea then you might be interested in knowing about the automotive re stylers Gullwing-America.

Their latest creation is called the SLS Panamerica, a seven piece body kit made from Hybrid Aluminum and carbon fiber that emphasizes the classic car’s signature side vents with a wider stance and include a few chrome details emphasizing accents like the grill frame. The new Gullwing rides on a set of staggered wheels measuring 19 inches up front and 20 inches out back. On the inside, Gullwing-America added Alcantara inserts into the sport buckets that resembles the original car’s plaid upholstery which is offset by modern touches like a set of illuminated brushed Aluminum door sills. What would be better than pulling up to a Silver Arrow car show in a truly retro 2010 Gullwing.

Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing to be on the cover of Gran Turismo 5?

While we all still fret over the still-to-be-finalized release date of Gran Turismo 5, another equally important question has surfaced recently: which car will have the privilege of gracing the cover of the most hotly-anticipated car racing game in five years?

Well, if you take the word of GT5 Creative Director, Kazunori Yamaguchi, then he has an opinion on one car that’s in the running – so to speak – to grace the cover of GT5: the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gullwing.

Sony has not made anything official as of yet but according to Yamaguchi, the SLS AMG is one of the favorites to be featured on the cover of GT5. “"The foremost reason is that the SLS AMG will probably be the most exciting car in the world when Gran Turismo 5 is released ... Also, in terms of styling and driving performance as well, it’s probably the hottest car around right now," he says.

We’re not arguing the fact that the SLS AMG is right up there at the top of a lot of people’s holiday wish list and in the event that it does end up as the face of GT5, then we have no oppositions on that too.

The first is a carbon fiber clad 21st century sports car complete with cooling vents and large driving lights and a bold Lorinser badge smack dab in the middle of the grill. The latter Lorinser SLS focuses on what made the legendary 300 SL Gullwing so memorable as a sophisticated grand touring car.

Mercedes SLS AMG vs. Ferrari F430

Mercedes SLS AMG vs. Ferrari F430

Mercedes went out to test the upcoming SLS AMG only to have the encounter of a lifetime. So who or what did they run in to? One of the future AMG built super car’s competitors in the marketplace, the Ferrari F430. On a more important note, the car is loosing more and more of its camouflage, meaning that we will soon see an official unveiling.

The SLS AMG will be powered by a hand built 6.2 liter AMG V8 engine that puts out a total of 571 HP, which is over 50 HP more than the AMG CL63 that shares the same engine design. The SLS will weigh in at just under 3575 pounds means that every horsepower being developed by the V8 has to push around about 6.25 pounds of gull wing, this allows the super car to accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in only 3.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 195 MPH.

Mercedes SLS AMG order guide revealed

Mercedes SLS AMG order guide revealed

The German luxury automaker Mercedes Benz has involuntarily had to unveil their ordering brochure for the upcoming SLS AMG supercar. Even if the online pamphlet doesn’t reveal any new shots of the supercar, it does reveal every detail and exactly how much every one of those options will cost.

The list includes: special $10,000 "ALU-BEAM liquid metal" paint, performance options like the $12,000 carbon-ceramic brakes and $1,500 sport suspension kit; but from what we can read the interior options are endless.

That is all in addition to the hand built 6.2 Liter V8 engine from the AMG workshop that will put out the most naturally aspirated horsepower of any tri-star sports car to wear the three letter emblem. We will just have to wait until the car drops in September at Frankfurt for a complete picture.

Check out the gallery to see the entire brochure.

Just like the McLaren SLR stole the hearts of the well to do from around the globe and became a must have item in every celebrity’s garage, when the modern gull wing goes on sale it to will become an instant classic. For a little more than a quarter of a million dollars, Mercedes Benz should have no problem moving as many of these SLS super cars as they can produce.

Bernd Schneider, the 5 time Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft champion with Motor Trend journalist Arthur St. Antoine at his side, had a little fun with the future SLS AMG at the Nurburgring. The last time a Mercedes Benz racing legend teamed up with a paper jockey was back when Sir Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson won the 1955 Mille Miglia in the original SLR 722.

Mercedes officially announced SLS AMG with electric drive

Mercedes officially announced SLS AMG with electric drive

Only a few days ago Top Speed brought you the first rumors on an electric vehicle version for the SLS AMG supercar. Well now its official, the German automaker has announced that the company is developing an exciting super sports car with a zero-emission high-tech power train.

The SLS AMG EV will feature four electric motors that make a combined peak output of 392 kW and a maximum torque of 880 Nm, that is 525 HP and 650 lb-ft of thrust. The four electric motors are positioned near the wheels as opposed to inside of them, this substantially reduces the unsprung mass compared to wheel-hub motors, allowing the SLS EV to handle just as well as the internal combustion kind.

The electric version will be able to sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in around 4.0 seconds, putting it on the same level as the SLS AMG super car powered by a hand built 6.2 Liter V8 developing 571 HP.
