2011 Ford Super Duty gets TorqShift 6-Speed Automatic Transmission

2011 Ford Super Duty gets TorqShift 6-Speed Automatic Transmission

The American automaker Ford has announced that the 2011 Ford Super Duty pick up truck will be available with their all new 6R140 heavy duty TorqShift six speed automatic transmission for both diesel and gasoline burning work trucks. The Ford 6R140 TorqShift transmission uses a Lepelletier-style powerflow, which is a proven method of getting the power to the rear wheels, however this will mark the first time that the unit will be used with a large displacement diesel. One of the key benefits of the Lepelletier layout is that it is a much less complex method of connecting the cogs and clutches. With the new 6R140, the six individual gear sets require only five clutches which don’t have to operate at such a rigorous pace increasing the system’s overall efficiency.

More info about Ford’s future F100

More info about Ford's future F100

Ford is developing a lightweight, more fuel-efficient pickup truck to slot in below its flagship F-150.

The new pickup truck, code-named P525, is being engineered on the F-150’s platform. But it will be lighter and slightly smaller, supplier and industry sources told Automotive News. The pickup is scheduled to go into production during the first half of 2011 at Ford’s Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Mich., sources said.

Ford may call the truck the F-100, bringing back a nameplate used for decades beginning in the 1950s. The new truck is larger than the Ford Ranger. But it might help take the place of that compact pickup, which could go out of production in 2009 when Ford’s Twin Cities plant in St. Paul., Minn., closes. Ford hasn’t said whether the Ranger will continue.

The new pickup is in Ford’s cycle plan, sources said. But it has not received final approval.

Ford smaller F-100 Pickup coming in 2011

Ford smaller F-100 Pickup coming in 2011

And talking about the new CO2 emissions regulations, how to you think a pick-up like the Ford F-150 will obey this regulation? Not very well; that’s for sure. But, no worry, if you really like pick-ups, but also care about the environment, Ford announced they start working on a smaller pick-up, based on the F-150, called F-100 and set to be launched in 2011.

The next generation F-1150, set to be launched in 2012 will also focus on "weight savings and manufacturing flexibility". It will be built on the body-on-frame platform, and the same one, with a few modifications will be used for the F-100.

The F-100 is expected to be just under 9/10ths the size of the 2009 F-150 - a form factor that the 2000-2006 Toyota Tundra was roundly criticized for not too long ago. But that was before U.S. fuel prices skyrocketed to over $3.50 a gallon for regular gasoline and demand for half-ton trucks began to dramatically shrink. F-150 sales have fallen 15.5% through April from 2007 levels.

Engine choices are said to include naturally aspirated and ’EcoBoost’ twin turbo gasoline direct injection V6 engines and one V8 gas motor. We’re also hoping Ford offers its 2010 4.4-liter light duty diesel V8 as an option. The engine mix will be critical as Ford seeks to meet 2015’s 28.6 miles-per-gallon CAFE target for light duty trucks that was recently established by the federal government.
