1968 Ferrari P5 Pininfarina

Ferrari P5 Pininfarina

In 1968 at the Geneva Motor Show Ferrari unveiled the 250 P5 Berlinetta Speciale, a concept car built as a collaboration between Ferrari and Pininfarina. It is the work of a 29 years old designer, Leonardo Fioravanti. The concept features many design elements which appeared on later Ferrari models.

The P5 featured gull-wing doors, a glass-covered mid-engine and styling that was low and curvy. The most notable thing about the concept was that it featured clear rear glass over the engine, much like many modern Ferrari do today.

Pinifarina also produced another similar prototype called the Alfa Romeo 33 Coupe Prototipo Speciale.

1970 Ferrari Modulo

Ferrari Modulo

Probably one of the most stunning concept cars ever built, the Ferrari Modulo was unveiled in 1970 at the Geneva Motor Show. The design was once again the work of Pininfarina, in the person of Paolo Martin.

Built on a 512S racing chassis, powered by a high revving 550 HP V12 that can be admired through the 24 oversized holes in the engine cover. This mid-engine concept was the last in a series by the Italian automaker, the 512 featured a canopy style windshield that opened forward, forcing the occupants to exit through the large opening, like in the Lancia Stratos.

The car is almost flat and a horizontal line separates the upper and lower halves. Unfortunately the wheels on the Modulo concept were streamlined into the bodywork, this made it nearly impossible for the 1970s concept to turn. Nothing opens and a decal covers the motor. The Modulo is not a functioning car, it cannot be driven and was not intended to do so.

Ferrari 512S Pininfarina

In 1969 at the Turin show Ferrari a second concept car prepared by Pininfarina, the 512S. The man responsible for the design was Filippo Sapino.

The concept was built on the chassis of the new 512S race car. Following the P5 concept, the 512S was even lower and more wedge-shaped. The 5 litre V12 provided power and the canopy tilted up for cockpit access.

Chevrolet brings the Corvette Stingray Concept to the 2009 South Florida International Auto show

You might have seen this sleek C6 based concept in the big screen blockbuster Transformers 2 and was previously known as the Corvette Centennial Concept, however now we can call the Stingray by its true name. Full of cues from a bygone era like the split rear window that dates back to the original 1963 Stingray Corvette. The concept made its debut earlier this year in Chicago, but it looked as good as ever sitting in South Beach. This concept came in a close second for concept vehicle of the show, but was only edged out slightly by its Cadillac cousin’s roof mounted solar panel. However the Stingray is absolutely stunning and the word is that the next generation Corvette will draw its inspiration from this concept.

Acura brings the ZDX concept to the 2009 South Florida International Auto Show

Acura brings the ZDX concept to the 2009 South Florida International Auto Show

The Japanese luxury automaker Acura brought their ZDX Concept to the 2009 Miami Auto Show in order to give South Florida consumers a preview as to what the upcoming 2010 ZDX production car will look like. The ZDX is a midsize crossover that was designed to merge the emotional appeal of a sports coupe and all-season, all-surface versatility, the all-new ZDX breaks new barriers for Acura and for the luxury market. Its "Passionate Getaway" design honors the driver and passenger first, while also providing an impeccably finished luggage storage area that bests that of most luxury sedans. The rear seat area, with its abbreviated doors and door handles creatively integrated into the C-pillar, accommodates three additional passengers as required for occasional trips. But overall, the ZDX targets its mission as a 2-passenger personal escape vehicle with unmistakable Acura style. Under the hood, Acura will use a 3.7 Liter V6 that will put out 300 HP and 270 lb-ft of torque and will be mated to an all new 6 speed automatic transmission.

Mitsubishi brings the Outlander GT Protoype to the 2009 South Florida International Auto Show

Mitsubishi brings the Outlander GT Protoype to the 2009 South Florida International Auto Show

The Japanese performance minded automaker Mitsubishi showed off a more aggressive crossover model back in New York earlier this year, however the EVO faced Outlander GT Prototype still manages to impress here in Miami. There is something about the squinting headlights ability to stare you down just like the 300 HP turbocharged all wheel drive Lancer Evolution X can despite the 230 HP V6 that makes this slightly larger CUV quite an attractive option for a commuter vehicle.

McLaren LM5 Concept by Matt Wlliams

McLaren LM5 Concept by Matt Wlliams

A few months ago, McLaren revealed that they were in the process of producing three vehicles in the coming future, one of which would be the likely successor of the McLaren F1. We all know that one of the three cars on tap to go on sale is the soon-to-be-released MP4-12C, leaving us with two more vehicles to speculate on. So, with speculation comes imagination, and for those with the skills to render a visual interpretation of a car, their imaginations are naturally shot to overdrive.

Coventry University graduate Matt Williams put is to good use when he created his interpretation of what the F1’s successor would look like. Calling it the McLaren LM5, Williams took elements from the original supercar including the unique three-seat layout with the driver seat on the center and the two other seats on both sides. To add more space to the interior, as well as reduce the overall weight of the car, Williams designed all three seats to be slim-as-can-be and in an apparent homage to McLaren’s rich F1 history, Williams also did away with standard seat belts and opted to use racing-style four-point harnesses for all three seats.

As far as the car’s engine is concerned, Williams decided to import an engine from BMW for his creation. Instead of a McLaren-developed powerplant, the young designer opted to use a BMW M5/M6 V10 engine that produces as much as 700 horsepower, giving justice to a car of McLaren’s stature.
