2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 U.S. pricing announced

2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 U.S. pricing announced

BMW is the only automaker that can successfully come up with market segments and then serve them to customers who are more than eager to gobble them up. The German automakers latest creation is the BMW X6 SAV, or sports activity vehicle, now this differs from ordinary SUVs because instead of being a storage box on wheels an active lifestyle calls for truck like ground clearance combined with a fastback roofline and room for four, even though it still has the same footprint as a full sized sport utility vehicle. This sounds perfect for the American market.

Despite the questionable nature of this fresh design, BMW is pushing the niche appeal of their luxury vehicle to the next level with a BMW X6 ActiveHybrid version and it will only cost consumers $89,775. Not bad considering that you will be able to counter any SUV protesters by informing them of your X6’s gas/electric hybrid drivetrain and then turn around and tell your muscle car friends about the BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology V8 and that you are laying down 485 HP and 575 lb-ft of torque to the pavement, just make sure that both conversations don’t coincide.

BMW introduces the X-Family

BMW introduces the X-Family

With the release of the new BMW X1, it was only a matter of time before BMW released a new set of family photos featuring the ‘X-Family’ and its latest addition to the clan. As part of a marketing campaign designed to introduce customers to the ‘X-Family’, BMW released these photos showing all four SUVs posing and mugging for the camera. Of course, cars can’t really do that but you get the picture.

While the X1 is of course a new model, BMW doesn’t have plans on redesigning the X5 and the X6 for another few years. The odd one out in this photo is the X3, which BMW is set to drop by the end of the year to pave way for the next-generation model to be launched sometime in 2010 along with the X4 that is if rumors surrounding the coupe-SUV hybrid become more than just hearsay.

In the meantime, the entry-level SUV title has been transferred to the X1, which incidentally, is already out in the European market.

Ian James Poulter takes a run around the track with a BMW X6 M

Ian James Poulter is a very good golfer, good enough even to be included in two of the biggest golf tours in the world today, the US PGA and the European Tour. And while Poulter has proven that he’s pretty good with a golf club in his hands, few people know that he’s also a natural out on the race track.

Recently, Poulter sat behind the wheel of the all-new BMW X6 M and pretty much held his own with the hybrid SUV, taking it to the absolute limit and, surprisingly, he manoeuvred in and out of the chicanes effortlessly like a seasoned racing pro. Of course, he’s much better at swinging golf clubs than he is at racing SUVs, otherwise he probably would’ve found a way past that blue BMW in the video.

You can’t have too many talents, IJP. But we have to admit, you were impressive out there on the tracks.

BMW X6 based Hamann Tycoon EVO

BMW X6 based Hamann Tycoon EVO

Back in January the tuning house Hamann released an appearance package for the BMW X6 sports activity vehicle, the modified car was then called the Tycoon for its over the top styling featuring bold arches and a redesigned front end filled with all sorts of scoops and air vents. Well it is now September and the aftermarket specialists are preparing to debut the next step in their tuning program at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

The BMW Tycoon EVO comes complete with a new set of widened front fenders and rear quarter panel extensions made of a lightweight composite that adds about two inches to the X6’s width. The front bumper is similar to before except that this time there are two rows of powerful LED running lights inside the large air vents on either side of the car as well as the traditional projector fog lamps as well. The side skirts bring the body closer to the ground and at the same time bring it out to meet the new wide fenders. Out back is a pair of wings, more vents than you can shake a stick at and a mild diffuser at the bottom that frames two large fat pipes stick out from behind the middle of the Tycoon EVO letting onlookers know that this is no SUV to be messing with.

Hamann has a plan to increase the output of any BMW that could wear the Tycoon EVO kit. The 3.0 Liter twin turbocharged inline six cylinder engine found in the BMW X6 xDrive35i has been tuned to produce a maximum output of 360 hp and almost 400 lb-ft of torque, while the diesel powered xDrive30d now delivers a peak of 265 HP and 443 lb-ft of torque and the xDrive35d now makes 320 HP and 487 lb-ft of torque. The most powerful of all the X6 models, the xDrive50i with its 5.0 Liter twin turbo direct injected V8 gets 501 HP and 516 lb-ft of twist while the Tycoon EVO’s top speed goes up to 186 MPH.

Press release after the jump.
