1931 Voisin C20 "Mylord" Demi-Berline on auction at Amelia Island

1931 Voisin C20 "Mylord" Demi-Berline on auction at Amelia Island

Back in 1930 the French automaker Gabriel Voisin unveiled the Voisin C20, however despite the vehicle’s extravagant two door cabriolet couch built body, it never made it past the working prototype stage. This is indeed a shame because the C20 is hailed as being one of the most sensational classics from the era, so the fact that it never made it into production is quite a shame. Luckily there is one example that has stood the test of time, code named Mylord it is believed to be the only C20 in existence. The elaborate grand tourer is powered by one of only five extraordinarily intricate Voisin 12 cylinder engines that are known to have been built, meanwhile Mylord’s interior draws heavily from its creator’s background in aviation with an array of dials and switches that are exposed for the driver to see. The auction house Gooding & Company have been fortunate enough to get their hands on this rare piece of automobilia and on March 12, 2010 at 4 PM at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance here in Florida, one lucky bidder will take home a true automotive icon.

Press release after the jump.

Update: eBay auction for Schumi’s ’94 Benetton car a hoax

Update: eBay auction for Schumi's '94 Benetton car a hoax

Those who remotely showed any interest in forking over 2 million euros for Michael Schumacher’s 1994 Benetton F1 car will be disappointed to know that the entire auction may have been a hoax from the beginning.

Then again, they should all be relieved that they didn’t just lose that kind of money over nothing.

A few days ago, reports surfaced that Schumi’s ’94 Betton car – the exact same one he used to win his first F1 championship – was being sold on eBay with bids reaching well over 2 million euros. But as the deadline for the auction neared, the eBay auction for the car mysteriously disappeared hours before the supposed deadline was to pass. Now, sceptics are saying that the whole thing may have been a ruse after all.

As if that wasn’t enough to draw a few chuckles from a lot of people, a new auction has started for another 94 Schumi-driven Benneton has now been listed on eBay with a starting bid of 1.15m pounds.

Nobody needs to remind us of the historical significance of this car, but all these faux auctions are slowly becoming ridiculous.

Gooding & Company puts a Jaguar D Type race car up for auction

Gooding & Company puts a Jaguar D Type race car up for auction

As classic an automobile that the Jaguar E Type was in the 1960s and 70s, it never could have come about without the factory built D Type race cars of the 1950s. If you missed out on the opportunity to own and experience this classic vertical finned racer with its pronounced round fenders well this might just be what you have been waiting for. That is because the auction house Gooding & Company is putting a classic 1956 Jaguar D Type up for auction on January 23rd, 2010. Besides the English automotive icon, Gooding will also auction off a rare Pininfarina 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet, a beautifully appointed 1956 Maserati A6G/54 Berlinetta, Hollywood’s 1934 Hispano-Suiza J-12 T68 Cabriolet as well as a top performing 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750.

The 1956 Jaguar D Type is powered by a 3.8 Liter straight six cylinder power plant that is capable of producing an estimated 300 HP, quite a feat for the 1950s. The quite large inline engine is mated to a four speed manual transmission because that is what they had back then. The car begun its racing career in 1956 competing in California and enjoyed continued success at tracks such as Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Palm Springs, Riverside, Paramount Ranch and Pomona. Making the D Type even more of a collector’s item is that over the car’s entire production run, only 87 units were ever made, and after a bit of wheel banging action there are most certainly less than that left in the world.

2010 Toyota F1 car up for sale

2010 Toyota F1 car up for sale

Toyota’s abrupt departure from Formula One has left a lot of people in stunned disbelief, especially when you consider that the supposed 2010 car was already completed well before the 2009 season ended.

Now that Toyota’s out, the question is what becomes of their 2010 car - and their whole design technology for that matter?

Well, they’re not putting it to waste, that’s what. According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, the Toyota F1 Team now has plans of selling off the data and designs of the car, preferably to one of the new teams that are set to make their debuts next year.

Out of the four teams – Lotus, Capos, Manor and USF1 - that are scheduled to have their inaugural race in Formula One in 2010, the two most logical teams to buy Toyota’s designs are Manor and USF1.

We don’t know exactly as to how much Toyota is selling their F1 technology, but we’re pretty sure that it’s going to come up for bid pretty soon between any of these new teams.

The obscene budget that Toyota has shelled out for its F1 division has finally caught up with them and combine that with the fact that the company is now re-directing its attention towards its core road car business prompted the Japanese auto giants to pull out of Formula One.

Michael Schumacher’s title-winning 1994 Benetton F1 car for sale at eBay

Michael Schumacher's title-winning 1994 Benetton F1 car for sale at eBay

For 2 million euros, you can buy just about anything you’re heart desires. But if there’s item where 2 million wouldn’t be enough, it’s Michael Schumacher’s 1994 Benetton Formula One car.

The said car, which is actually the exact same one Schumacher drove on his way to his first Formula One championship, is being auctioned off at eBay with the current bid price now reaching 2.6 million euro (£2.3m).

The car’s owner and seller has advertised the car on the German eBay site and in addition to the car itself, the whole package comes with two extra sets of wheels and tires, plus a data laptop that monitors the car’s fluid levels and temperatures.

The car has also been restored to its original appearance. If you recall back in 1994, Schumacher crashed into Damon Hill in the last race of season. As a result of the crash, Hill – who finished second to Schumi that season – was forced to retire from the race, thereby handing over the title to the German.

In the event that you’re interested in making the purchase, you have until Monday to make a bid for the F1 car, although at 2.6 million euros, we strongly advise you to just hang on to your cash – unless of course you’re the biggest Michael Schumacher fan in the world.

Bentley to auction off artworks on December 1 to aid cancer center

The men and women behind Bentley will be holding an invitation-only art auction at the Bonhams auction house on December 1. The auction, which was organized to benefit the Christie Hospital in Manchester, England, will include a “vast array of sculptures, painting, digital art and photography. Created in many different media, from sculptures in bronze and set in wood, to metal and leather, to Perspex, to palette knife and brush paintings on canvas, the works showcase the imagination of the men and women who design Bentley cars."

The artistic minds of the Bentley designers – a total of 22 designers participated in the whole project – was evident after the Bentley brass proudly displayed 10 of the soon-to-be auctioned off pieces to international customers and press members during the Frankfurt Motor Show. According to Dirk van Braeckel, head designer, “the work embodies the best aesthetics possible, with advanced technology in the forefront, a combination of the work we do technically with a passion for the brand that is very very strong in this team.”

If you’re interested in any of the artworks and would like to post a bid on any of them, you can do so at their website until 12 noon of December 1. You can also check out the items up for bid at the same site.

Press release after the jump.

One-off Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano China Edition sold at an auction for $1.75 million

One-off Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano China Edition sold at an auction for $1.75 million

Remember that one-off Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano China Limited Edition; the one that was designed by renowned Chinese artist Lu Hao?

Well, it was auctioned off today at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing for a whopping $1.75 million. Unfortunately, the identity of the winning bidder was withheld so we have no idea who he was, although, we do know that he’s probably rich enough to afford paying for this car.

If you recall, this uber-rare Ferrari, which incidentally was based from a limited edition 599 that is going to be exclusively sold in China, was designed by Mr. Hao with pottery patterns from the legendary Song Dynasty.

While the one-off 599 was the highlight of the auction, other Ferrari items were also up for bids, including racing overalls worn by Giancarlo Fisichella, as well as a helmet and model car that has been signed by no less than seven-time F1 world champion, Michael Schumacher.

The auction was done as part of a fund-raising where proceeds generated by the auction would go to the funding of a number of students and teachers from the Department of Automotive Engineering at Tsinghua University. These select group of students and teachers will be given the opportunity to go on a trip to the land of the Prancing Horse – Italy – where they’ll be given a chance to study at Politecnico di Milano University and take up an internship job at Ferrari.

2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupe and 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster fetch a combined £1.1 million at the RM Auctions

2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupe and 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster fetch a combined £1.1 million at the RM Auctions

While most of us are drooling over the prospect of driving off into the sunset with the supercar of our dreams, two people who attended the recent RM Auction in London went home with their own supercars that they can now proudly call their own.

Two of the main attractions at the said auction were a pair Mercedes-Benz CLK GTRs – one was a 2005 Coupe version and the other was of the 2006 Roadster variety. Expensive and rare – only 20 coupes and five roadsters were ever built – at the same time, the CLK GTRs sold for a combined £1.1 million – a ‘somewhat’ bargain price considering the ‘beyond exclusive’ tag attached to these two cars.

While the two new – and lucky – owners of these cars were not identified, we do know that the 2005 CLK GTR Coupe sold for £522,500 while the 2006 Roadster version fetched a pretty cool £616,000.

It also goes without saying that the GTRs are not your prototypical Mercedeses. Fine-tuned by no less than HWA, the cars come with a 6.9-liter V12 engine that’s capable of churning out up to 612 horsepower. In addition to that, the two models also came with reinforced features including a six-speed sequential manual gearbox, a dual independent double-wishbone suspension, and carbon fiber brakes.

For the record, we don’t have that kind of money so the very idea of purchasing these cars shall, and will forever be a pipe dream for us. But in the wishful scenario that we did have £1.1 million to throw around, then investing on not one, but two cars of this stature is something that we’d also do in a heartbeat.

’Original’ Bumblebee Camaro is going up for auction

'Original' Bumblebee Camaro is going up for auction

To be clear, the original Bumblebee was a Volkswagen Beetle so we’ll get that matter-of-fact statement out of the way.

What we are talking about of course was the first incarnation of Bumblebee in the movie Transformers and if you’ve seen the movie, you know it’s not the 2010 Chevy Camaro but rather a dilapidated looking 1977 Camaro. We’re saying all of this because it’s been brought to our attention that the said car – yes the one that chased Sam Witwicky while he was riding his mother’s pink bicycle – is now up for sale.

The car, naturally, is far from peak condition, but it does have all the necessary equipment to make it functional. Plus, it also comes with a certificate of authenticity from Bay Films, which means that this specific car was, in fact, the one that was used in the first movie and the very same one Mikaela (Megan Fox) called a ‘piece of crap Camaro’forcing Bumblebee to upgrade his model.

We don’t have a price on the car yet, but we’re hearing that it’s being sold for around $12,000 – to $15,000. Considering the world-wide fame – or notoriety – this car was able to garner from being in the movie, we think that it’s a bargain worth looking into.

Final figures for Monterey auction release; Gooding & Company occupies top spot

Final figures for Monterey auction release; Gooding & Company occupies top spot

Monterey has always been one of the biggest car auction weekends in the world. This year’s event, which recently concluded last August 13-15, saw a total of 836 cars of all varieties being held up for auction.

Of the 836 cars, 558 were sold for a total of $118,296,823. While the numbers are impressive in all aspects, this year’s figure was actually 17 percent less than what the event took last year ($138,996,425)

The top money-maker this year was Gooding & Company, which sold over $50,753,850 worth of exotic cars, including a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder – that’s a long name – which sold for a whopping $5.1 million.

Coming in second was RM with a total amount of $35,522,600, including a special edition Phil Hill Jaguar C-Type that was purchased for $2.5 million.
